Ferry Field

Immediately behind the IM Building, Ferry Field is one of the most historic athletic sites in Ann Arbor. Until 1905, Michigan football games had been played on the site where Schembechler Hall now stands. In honor of his donation of a sizeable portion of land (on which much of the athletic campus has been built), the Regents had named the site Ferry Field. In 1906, a new Ferry Field was built in its current location off Hoover Street. At that time, it was used solely for football. Its stands and pressbox were located on the current site of the IM Building. For the next 20 years, Ferry Field was the home of Michigan Football.

In 1927, football moved to the brand-new Michigan Stadium. Ferry Field was converted to an outdoor track and field facility. In 1935, Ohio State athlete Jesse Owens set three world records here in a single day.

Now, the eight lane track and related facilities are still used for outdoor track and field events. The nearby Track and Tennis Building serves indoor events
