Before we can leave the Arboretum, we first must pay a visit to the peony garden. This garden was established in 1927 by Aubrey Tealdi, the Arboretum's first director, and included many plants given to Professor Tealdi by Dr. Walter Upjohn, founder of the Upjohn Corporation. While the garden declined during several of the decades since, in the late 1980s it was restored, and many of the original historical varieties were reclaimed or replaced from various sources. Now, the garden is once again an outstanding collection, including over 200 varieties introduced between 1807 and 1948, most in the early 1900s.
