High ground on Half-moon Island

January 31, 1994

On the far side of Half-moon Island, there was a spectacular view of the glacier-covered Livingston Island, which contrasted very well with the rocky, lichen and penguin infested island that were were on.

The high ground near the top of the island afforded a great view of our landing site, with all of the passengers swarming over the beach, like a bunch of red-coated penguins. The Argentinian base was just visible along a distant stretch of the spindly island.

Before we got back onto the Zodiacs to return to the ship, we cleaned off our boots using toilet bowl cleaners and seawater in tubs. (We did the same thing back on the Marco Polo's gangway, to make sure we got it all off.) Guano is smelly stuff, and we had weeks left to go on the ship!
