Gentoo Penguins

February 1, 1994

Gentoo penguins everywhere!

This was easily a much larger rookery than the Chinstrap colony we saw on Half-moon Island. The entire rocky area of the island here was covered with Gentoo nests. But there were plenty of penguins walking around between the nests also. These folks seemed usually to be on their way down to the water or back to their nests, occasionally stopping along the way for a nice-looking stone for sprucing up the nest, or a bickering match with another family.

Gentoos on the go

Back at the nests, the chicks seemed generally contented when well-fed, and spent a lot of their time on their stomachs relaxing, fattening up, and growing their adult plumage for their end-of-summer first swim.
