A catamaran ride on the Beagle Channel

January 29, 1994

On the catamaran, we saw many islands and much of the coastline surrounding Ushuaia. The trees along the shore were obviously shaped by the weather, bending over together like hardened grasses in a strong wind.

The U shaped valleys created by glaciers were much more evident from the channel, since it gives a better perspective on the overall shape of the mountains. When in the valleys, it is often difficult to ignore the local perturbations in the terrain and see the overall U-shaped nature of things.

Looking back at Lapataia Bay from the channel

Once we had left Lapataia Bay and moved farther out into the Beagle Channel, we encountered an archipelago of small, rocky islands. Many of these were inhabited by active crowds of sea birds.
