Stonington Island

One of the most historic islands in Antarctica, Stonington was the site of a base established in 1940 by the Byrd Little America Expedition, but it was abandoned shortly thereafter when funding ran out. In 1945, the British established a well-equipped station which was used throughout the year -- summer and winter. This also served as the base for the 1947-48 Antarctic Research Expedition of FinnRonne, who mapped a great portion of the continent by air. In 1947 the station leader was Dr. Bernard Stonehouse, who is now part of our own expedition team.

Stonington Island is the site of the Byrd Little America Expedition and one of the Peninsula's most historic sites. Established in 1940, funding ceased shortly afterwards due to World War II and it was abandoned. In 1945, the British established a year-round operation close by with a well-equipped station. During your visit, Dr. Bernard Stonehouse, one of your expedition team, will bring to life the history of Stonington. He served as the station's base leader from 1947-48 during the Antarctic Research Expedition of Finn Ronne.
